Moving cities for work is exciting and a little overwhelming. This checklist is what we tell women who call us a few weeks before their joining date. It is written for Rohini, but most of it works anywhere in Delhi.

Two to three weeks before you move

  • Keep your documents together: Aadhaar or another government photo ID, a few passport-size photos, your offer letter or office ID, and a family member's contact number. Any good PG will ask for these.
  • Work out your commute first. If your office is near Netaji Subhash Place, Pitampura or along the Red Line, living near Rohini East Metro saves you an hour a day. Our Red Line guide explains the routes.
  • Shortlist two or three PGs and visit them. Photos help, but standing in the room tells you about light, noise, cleanliness and the people who run it.
  • Ask the money questions early: monthly rent, deposit, notice period, what is included and what is extra (food, AC, laundry). Get the answers in writing before you pay.

What to pack

Rooms at a furnished PG come with a bed, mattress and storage, so you do not need furniture. Pack light and buy the rest locally:

  • Bedsheets, a pillow and a light blanket (Delhi winters need a heavier one from November)
  • A small lock for your almirah, a water bottle and a mug
  • A multi-plug extension and your chargers
  • Basic medicines and copies of any prescriptions
  • Office clothes for the first two weeks; everything else can follow

Choosing the right room

A private room costs the most but gives you quiet after long days. Twin sharing is the usual balance of cost and space. Triple sharing keeps rent lowest and suits people who are out most of the day. If you work shifts, a private or twin room makes sleeping much easier.

Your first week

  • Get a Delhi Metro card or use QR tickets on the DMRC app. The first coach in the direction of travel is reserved for women.
  • Find your daily-needs spots: the local market for groceries and a chemist, and M2K (about 0.9 km) or Unity One Mall (about 1.2 km) for everything else.
  • Save the nearest hospital: Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital is about 1.2 km from Pocket 5.
  • Set up delivery apps such as Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy and Zomato; they all deliver in Sector 7.
  • Share your PG's address and the owner's number with your family.
